It's really a Rescue Mission!
The sheets used in our loo rolls begin life as sugarcane plants (surprise!). And no, we’re not planting vast fields of sugarcane just for toilet rolls. Our secret lies in the sugarcane industry.
Sugarcane is primarily grown for its sucrose-rich juice, which is extracted to be turned into sugar. After all the juice is squeezed out, what’s left behind is a fibrous byproduct called bagasse. Usually, bagasse ends up in landfills or gets burnt en masse (VERY not eco-friendly). But not on our watch!
We swoop in and rescue the bagasse from it's landfill or fiery fate, sending it to our factories to be processed into sheets. It’s just one of the things that make our loo rolls so eco friendly!
From Stalk to Sheet
Once the bagasse arrives at the processing facility, it’s time to start turning it into the super-soft sheets we all know and love.
First, it’s crushed and shredded to separate it's fibres. The extracted fibres are then cleaned to remove any dirt, debris, and lignin (the natural glue that holds the plant fibres together).
Next up is the pulping stage. The treated fibres are mixed with water to create a squishy pulp, which is then deposited on a moving mesh conveyor belt. Excess water is drained away, making sure that only the pulp with the perfect moisture level makes it to the next round. The remaining wet pulp is then pressed to remove even more water, forming a super-long, continuous sheet of paper.
Now, it’s time to dry things up. The damp paper sheet gets passed through heated rollers or drying cylinders to evaporate the remaining moisture, and is wound onto enormous rolls – a little too big for most bathrooms. That’s where the cutting process comes in!
The big rolls of paper are hauled over to a converting facility, where they’re sliced up into smaller rolls that are perfect for use at home or in businesses. Most standard toilet rolls are made up of around 200 sheets, but we believe in going one step further – our 2-ply domestic rolls boast a whopping 400 heavenly soft sheets each, while our 2-ply commercial toilet paper has an impressive 1,257 sheets per roll!
The (Still Important!) Finishing Touches
Before the sugarcane toilet paper is sent out, it is put them through some serious quality control. It's tested for strength, flushability, and softness, so you can be sure every roll you receive is the highest quality it can be.
If they pass the test, the rolls are packed into recyclable paper or cardboard packaging and prepared to be sent out. They're packed into super-compact crates so we can send out as many as we can in one transport, shrinking their carbon emissions as much as possible. Finally, they’re sent out into the world and onto your doorstep!
So there you have it: the story of how our loo rolls start life in sugarcane fields, and end up in your home or business’s bathrooms. The next time you order some on the Canua website, take a minute to remember the adventure it’s been on to bring you a super-sweet bathroom experience!
